The primary responsibility of this attorney will be to provide legal support and counseling for Honda's regulatory compliance functions, especially the company's compliance with Department of Transportation and Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations. As part of this function, this attorney will also be responsible for ensuring that the company is aware of impending changes and developments in its government compliance obligations. This attorney will work closely with the company's engineering and quality groups to understand product field performance (particularly as it relates to determinations of product defects and/or non-compliance with Federal regulations) and to ensure timely and accurate reporting and coordination with the necessary state and federal agencies as needed.

This attorney will also have responsibility for advising on matters relating to the company's compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, with opportunities to handle other matters as team needs dictate. In this capacity, this attorney will work directly with outside counsel and will be responsible for case evaluation. The attorney will also be responsible for working internally with paralegals, engineers, and witnesses in a variety of roles, and will be expected to participate on cross-functional teams with other members. A successful candidate should be comfortable counseling business managers about risk management and product safety issues.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing day to day legal support and counseling to internal clients regarding government and regulatory compliance, especially with regard to Department of Transportation and Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations
  • Ensuring that internal clients are aware of impending changes in regulations and laws that affect the company's business operations and reporting obligations
  • Counseling business units on litigation and government reporting risks, as necessary
  • Counseling the company on compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, with the potential to get involved in other matters affecting the company's business operations
  • Working with paralegals, engineers, and other internal business units;
  • Working with outside counsel and leading teams of attorneys to develop case strategy
  • Interfacing with and maintaining excellent relationships with government agencies and outside counsel
  • Working to be a valued member of the Honda legal team


  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • California State Bar admittance or eligible for admission to the California State Bar
  • 10 years major law firm and/or similar in-house experience defending product related matters and/or working with government agencies
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Good people management skills
  • Familiar with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), the Motor Vehicle Safety Act requirements, and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulations (preferred)
  • Familiar with state and federal environmental regulations affecting the automotive industry (preferred)
  • Self-starter, accustomed to handling assignments and cases with relative independence
  • Ability to manage multi-party disputes
  • Skilled and comfortable in working with engineers and other professional non-legal personnel.
