LINE TECHNICIAN
I. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Line Technician will serve the members and support the goals of Jefferson Energy Cooperative by effectively and efficiently providing optimal electric service to members/customers by performing diversified work of construction and repair involved in the distribution of electricity. To develop and promote the required adherence to all established safety rules, regulations, and practices.
II. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports to: Line Supervisor
- Directs: As Position Dictates
III. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Construct, maintain and operate electrical distribution system and adhere to approved specification practices, procedures, and policies.
- Perform overhead and underground line work, both construction and maintenance of energized lines.
- Interpret maps, staking sheets, specs, blueprints, and diagrams.
- Account for materials assigned to job.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of Jefferson Energy’s distribution line system, underground and overhead.
- Interact with members/consumers in a friendly, courteous, and helpful manner.
- Attend job training and safety meetings.
- Line Technicians may be required to supervise the crew in the absence of the Line Supervisor.
- Maintain assigned tool, equipment, and vehicles; advises Line Supervisor of need for repairs or new equipment.
- Assists with trouble calls, as required.
- Works cooperatively with other Jefferson Energy employees to promote the "team" concept at all times.
- Makes himself/herself available for any work that may be required at times other than normal working hours and will be expected to take part in the cooperative's “on-call" system.

The LINE TECHNICIAN shall be required to perform any other duties assigned in order to fulfill the objective of the cooperative.
IV. EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
- GSOC/GTC: Power supply restoration.
- County Utility Inspector: To coordinate JEC construction on state and county right-of-ways.
- Other utility companies: To coordinate efforts.
- Members/Consumers and general public.
- Building Contractors/Electricians
Job Knowledge, Training Experience:
Required:
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent; satisfactory completion of an accredited lineman apprenticeship program; however, experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements; valid Class A commercial driver’s license.
Preferred:
Prior lineman experience with satisfactory performance; ITS certification; DOT Flagman certification; CPR/First Aid certification.
Abilities and Skills:
Required:
- Position requires ability to meet and deal with the public;
- Must be able to operate bucket, line truck, cable locator, and trencher;
- Competent computer skills are required;
- Accuracy and attention to detail is important on staking sheets.
Physical Effort and Working Conditions:
Occasionally lift up to 70 pounds. Occasionally operates heavy equipment. Must be able to stand, walk and stoop. Due to equipment weight limits, the technician must weigh 315 lbs. or less.
This position requires approximately 5% indoor work in a normal office environment and 95% outdoor work in all weather conditions. Overtime may be required during power outages, storms, or inclement weather. May be required to travel overnight for seminars and workshops, or longer for storm related activities/restoration.

Line Worker
- Entry level
- High school diploma or equivalent
- CDL Class A
- Satisfactory Work Keys scores
Apprentice Line Technician
- Minimum of six months satisfactory performance as a Line Worker and recommendation of supervisor; or Lineman Tech school certification; or an associate’s or two-year technical degree in related field of study; or prior experience in line construction.
- Basic knowledge of electricity and construction of distribution system.
- Satisfactory completion of all OJT training requirements as a Line Worker
Line Technician I
- Minimum of one-year satisfactory performance as an Apprentice Line Technician and recommendation of supervisor.
- Completion of the approved Lineman training program class work and Exercise 1.
- Satisfactory completion of all OJT training requirements as an Apprentice Line Technician.
- Completion of JEC’s Line Technician I written exam and skills test. Test must be completed with a satisfactory score of 80% or better.
Line Technician II
- Minimum of two years satisfactory performance as a Line Technician I and recommendation of supervisor.
- Completion of the Lineman training program Exercises 2, 3 & 4.
- Satisfactory completion of all OJT training requirements as a Line Technician I.
- Completion of JEC’s Line Technician II written exam and skills test. Test must be completed with a satisfactory score of 80% or better.
- Completion of ITS Certification.
Line Technician III
- Minimum of two years satisfactory performance as a Line Tech II and recommendation of supervisor.
- Must have a minimum of one year experience in overhead construction and a minimum of one
